“Anika’s performance inspired me to be in touch with my own emotions and thoughts as a black woman. I am grateful for the honesty, grace, and power in each piece. It truly was a gift to experience.”–Elizabeth L.

May 11 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Anika has been invited by James Scruggs, playwright of  3/Fifths, to do a talkback session with him and her longtime colleague, Joseph DiCenso, directly following the May 11th performance. 3/FIFTHS is a comprehensive theatrical exploration of root causes and continued violence perpetrated against men of color, and America’s fascination with the virtual weaponization of black skin. The work will incorporate large scale immersive video, performance, text, music, and radical interactivity to trace the brutality from America’s original sin (slavery), to the latest unarmed black man killed due to heavily armed policemen fearing for their lives.

This summer, Anika will again be part of a diverse, residential, social justice community  that will strive to help 16 and 18 year-olds from across the country find their leadership identity. For three weeks, adult staff and the youth live together on the Cal State University, Channel Islands campus as part of a participatory democracy immersion experience called The Encampment, in which the young people will create lasting friendships, attend workshops, hear speakers, devise their own community government, go on field trips. research social justice issues, and engage in art-making activities–digital storytelling, writing, dance, poetry performance, etc. As a culminating event (open to the public) on July 20, they will make group presentations to  an inter-generational audience of Encampers and Encampment alumni, and leave having identified a social justice issue in their community that they will develop an action plan for. Anika will be coordinating the Encampment Regional Advisory Board of Western MA that will support new and old Encampers in the Western, MA, staff , and community leaders to nurture the young people and cultivate their plans for their communities.
